Only Direction: To Girls Who Don’t Listen To Their Music

At six fifteen this morning I was roused from a dead sleep by this,

“Tell me how to turn your love on
You can get get anything that you want…

I just wanna show you off to all of my friends
Making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins
Baby, be mine tonight

And you just wanna take me home
Baby, say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah
And let me kiss you.”

Can anyone else say nightmare? I didn’t handle it well. First I whisper begged that it would stop. Then it got louder. I rolled out of bed stumbled into the bathroom and unplugged the iPod. Needless to say, my little sister wasn’t happy.  We have different musical tastes. She is young, impressionable, and loves popular music particularly One Direction. Their song, Kiss You, was my alarm this morning. She listens to all their music, watches their YouTube videos, and could tell you the favorite color of every single  group member and their girlfriends’… and their girlfriends’ pug’s food brand. I know its a phase many girls go through, but the music is getting worse and worse.

Only Direction: To Girls Who don't listen to their musicDoes anyone else notice lyrics?

1. Half of them are about sex, making out, and being drooled over.

2. Half of them aren’t accurate, only popular because they make you feel good.

I don’t want my little sister getting pumped up to songs that say:

“Let’s go crazy, crazy, crazy ’til we see the sun
I know we only met but let’s pretend it’s love
And never, never, never stop for anyone
Tonight let’s get some and live while we’re young

And if we get together, yeah, get together
Don’t let the pictures leave your phone”

– Live While We’re Young

This song was called a a young man’s version of a “booty call” by reviewers, but because it was written by the same boys who wrote “What Makes You Beautiful”  it was a top ten teeny-bopper hit. For our older audiences “go crazy”, “pretend it’s love”, “get some”, and “get together” are all euphemistic for sex while the pictures on the phone is a reference to the underage pornography they would be creating.

This makes me sad and mad.

Talk about subliminal messaging. Young girls are filling their minds with this ‘idea of perfection.’ They are hearing, but not listening. They can sing every line, but don’t notice whats wrong with it until it is pointed out.

I do the same thing though. I’ve caught myself singing along to songs I would never  act like. It is so easy to fill our minds with trash. Music on the radio, commercials rife with innuendo, the shows in between, and eye teasing books cram  information into our minds that isn’t censored. This band is targeting tweens and teens (10+)  with sexy songs disguised as bubble gum pop.

Beautiful According to OxfordLet’s Take A Look

1. What Make’s You Beautiful

Ok, this one is catchy and my sisters are both obsessed. Every girl wants to hear that some guy  (and everyone else) thinks she is beautiful. My main issue with this is that it reduces beauty to hair flipping, smiling at the ground, and being insecure about her physical appearance. I was a little confused though – Does he want her so desperately because she is insecure and doesn’t know how physically attractive she is? Well isn’t that admirable.

Here is the message I want women to hear, listen, and believe:

Beauty is in your character. Every body is unique, to be maintained and kept healthy. You can’t compare one to another. If you are taking care of yourself and not being a slob, you’re physically fine.

2. One Thing

I don’t think this is a healthy relationship. She’s kryptonite… If he is Superman in this illustration, it’s doomed…He also doesn’t know her name and watches her because she has that one thing… What is that one thing?  Who knows, but she should probably not fall into his arms – What if she lost it.

3. Rock Me

“I want you to rock me, rock me, rock me
I want you to hit the pedal heavy metal show me you care”

If you really need an explanation… rock me is another euphemism….in the Summer of ’09 on a beach – Don’t think about how old they were…or do and be slightly irked that they are once again encouraging young impressionable women  to have premarital sex.

Just what every parent wants their children to hear multiple times a day.

4.Up All Night

“The party’s ending but it’s now or never
Nobody’s going home tonight.

People going all the way
Yeah, all the way

Find a girl and tell her she’s the one
Get out of control

And do it all with you”

What Direction Can We Go?

I don’t know what to tell you.

What Makes You Beautiful? God’s image inside you.

Do you have that One Thing? The Spirit of God in your life.

Live While We’re Young? Well I’m not dead, so I might as well use my time wisely…

I Wish? I Want? A lasting relationship with real love, not something pretended for a night.

Think about the music you fill your mind with.

Please.

Heaven Song

Cause I wanna run on greener pastures,

I wanna dance on higher hills,

I wanna dring from sweeter pastures in the misty morning chills,

And my soul is getting restless for the place where I belong

I can’t wait to join the angels and sing my heaven song.
